Welcome to OddOne's White LED Information (or "OWLI" for short, YA RLY!) - your source for info on homebrewing LED projects, LED news, and, well, anything you never wanted to know about LEDs but were forced to find out.
New homebrew projects and a review or two are on the to-do list, so stay tuned for those!

And now for something genuinely useful: an easy, four-component linear current regulator that makes a wonderful power LED driver. Add three more parts and you'll get switching and PWM support. Best of all, it's a simple, flexible design that an be built with inexpensive through-hole or surface-mount parts.

Motivational posters are popular online, so I figured I'd whip up something relevant to LEDs...

Building A Reflow Controller For Griddle/Hotplate/Toaster Oven

OddOne here with a project budding electronics nuts the world over might like/want/
need... a reflow soldering controller. Oh, we're not talking about any old timer-and-thermometer deal here, folks - this is a digital, programmable industrial process-control system built into a box. Said box can convert just about any hotplate, griddle, or toaster oven into a properly managed and temp-controlled reflow soldering system. Best of all, few to no modifications are required to the heating device! Sound intriguing yet? Read on...
REVIEW: Dragon Skin Q Two-Part Liquid Silicone Rubber

"Wait a minute, why are you reviewing silicone rubber on a LED website?" Why, I'm glad you asked. This stuff has uses in the LED world, and it's good enough at these to warrant a 5-out-of-5 review.

I am a New York artist who creates illuminated costumes. Five 3-Watt Luxeon LED light engines were especially created for this costume. 375 fiber optics strands, from 5 stripped endglow cables, are sown onto a white jumpsuit. Details follow below.
I would love some help creating a color-fading light engine. I need the brightness of at least a 3 Watt Luxeon to get sideglow out of fiber-optics. Is it possible, through optics, to channel multiple light beams into one fiber bundle?

This project started for a bit of fun, but after posting to a thread at Candlepower forums one member suggested an actual use! It could be used as a face light by a photographer or film maker to balance out background lighting without having to carry a bag of filters to get the right light balance. Cool. Other serious uses include a base for a light saber and to hypnotize people with mesmerising light sequences and to make pretty colours. I hope it provides some ideas for other constructors.

OddOne back on the attack with a review of a whole product line - Carlco's line of optics and holders for LEDs. I found them to be worthy of

, for a couple reasons I found surprising. Read on for the specifics!
Dorcy 1-AA 3-LED + 1w Luxeon Star, A Quickie Mod

OddOne here, with another mod. This time I rework my poor unsuspecting lightly stumble-around-the-house light, the basic 1-AA 3-LED flashlight from Dorcy, to install a spare 1-watt Luxeon and NX05 optic. The result: an underdriven Luxeon with about 8 times the brightness as the three 5mm LEDs, in a package that vanishes in a pocket, and runs off ONE AA battery.

OddOne back on the attack, with a sequel to the LED Lenser V2 3-watt preview. In this article I mod a preproduction, not-yet-available-anywhere light to make it not only unobtainable at present but unique, and by so doing increase the light's performance by a noteworthy amount. Read on for the juicy details.

OddOne here, with a (p)review on LED Lenser's upcoming V2 3-watt lithium-powered
LED flashlight, courtesy of Coast. I gave this gem

- while it's a solid flashlight, read on for why it didn't QUITE make the five-star mark.

OddOne here - One of the OWLI members, rkline, passed me word on a potentially moddable gem he spotted in the
Harbor Freight catalog - a Mag clone of sorts from Gordon. A quick review follows, and I might hafta snatch up one and see if it'll hold some Luxeons or Light Engines, muahahahaha...

OddOne here, with my most ambitious project to date, Snake Eyes 2. Sporting TWO Luxeon IIIs in Pelican M6 reflectors and driven by a uFlex driver board, this is one hell of a light! TONS of pics in this article, too...

OddOne here, with another goodie for the destruction of retinal tissue: take one Brinkmann Legend LX, replace its bulb holder with a pedestal heatsink and its bulb with a Royal-Blue Luxeon III, add some lithium battery lovin', and defy the eyes once more...

I got my mitts on one of George Scolaro's uFlex driver boards, and it's got some very nice features. Nice enough that it warrants a

Fire Light - LEDs shimmer randomly as though on fire

Stepan brings another slick little circuit to our little abode of LED information: a fire-like flicker driver for LEDs! Personally I would think a few of these driving an array of red, orange, and yellow LEDs would be AWESOME...
